Maldivians will head to the polls in the second democratic presidential election in the nation's history on September 7, 2013.

This election, although regularly scheduled, follows the controversial resignation by President Mohamed Nasheed in February 2012, after which Vice President Mohamed Waheed was sworn in as President. These events led to a sharp political divide in the country. The upcoming vote will be critical for stability in the short-term as well as setting the foundation for a representative government in the long-term.
