An image of a person with a disability in India on his way to vote with the assistance of his son was selected as the Grand Prize winner in the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) 2016 Photography Contest. A photo of eager citizens in queue to obtain their citizenship cards and enroll on the Election Commission of Nepal's voter register at a mobile camp in Kailali district, Nepal was selected as the IFES Choice winner of the Photography Contest.

IFES selected 10 photographs of elections and other civic activities as finalists in the democracy-themed contest. More than 100 images were entered in the competition, which was open to all levels of photographers and encouraged submissions that captured the essence of IFES’ core areas of work: electoral integrity, participation and inclusion, accountability, and women’s empowerment.

Dipayan Bhar won the Grand Prize, selected by a panel of professional photographers, with the photograph “Voter with a Disability.” Nilu Basnyat won the IFES Choice award, selected by IFES staff, with the photograph “Citizenship and Voter Registration Mobile Camp.” Click here to view the photo gallery.
