IFES Condemns the Murder of Libyan Lawyer Intesar El-Hsairi

Published

The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is deeply saddened by the murder of Libyan lawyer and civil society activist Intesar El-Hsairi and strongly condemns this cowardly act of violence. We offer our condolences to her family and remember her dedication, commitment and ultimate sacrifice for women’s participation in the political process and equal rights in Libya.

IFES was honored to work alongside El-Hsairi – who was a participant in IFES's first women's advocacy training held in Tripoli. She was an active participant during the training and showed great potential and capability in working with others. During the past two years, El-Hsairi became an active member of several movements that spoke out against the violence taking place in Libya and in the past few weeks received several threats on her life for her outspoken and courageous beliefs. El-Hsairi was a founding member of the Altanweer movement, which focused on providing books for those less privileged in different areas around Tripoli. She was also active in organizing relief for Touaregans in refugee camps, arranging campaigns to provide them with medicine and clothing during the winter months.

IFES reaffirms its commitment to working with the brave men and women of Libya and the international community for a peaceful transition to a democracy that ensures human rights for all. We will continue to support electoral processes that provide Libyans with the opportunity to express their voice and elect their representatives in free and fair elections.
