Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on recent African elections. His piece, “The Elections We Want,” covered 2017 elections in Angola, Rwanda, Liberia, Senegal, the Gambia, and Kenya, and their implications for election practitioners moving forward.

Sudan’s First Vote After Peace Agreement
From April 11 to 15, 2010, Sudan’s citizens turned out to vote in the first nationwide election held since 1986. The election, a key milestone of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), marked the first time the vast majority of Sudanese had ever voted and served as an important opportunity for those in the south and Abyei to practice this civic duty in anticipation of the next CPA milestones: the January 2011 Referendum on Southern Sudan’s independence and Abyei Referendum. Nationally, Omar Hassan al-Bashir was re-elected as President of Sudan with 68% of the vote, and in the South, Salva Kiir Mayardit was re-elected as President of Southern Sudan with just shy of 93% of Southern Sudan’s vote.

Perspectives Sur Les Elections Libres Et Equitables Au Congo, Evaluation et Recommandations du Referendum du 15 mars 1992
This report summarizes IFES findings regarding the prospects for free and fair elections in the Congo. The report, published in 1992 assesses the Congolese electoral system and advances its recommendations for upcoming elections. The report discusses the strengths and weaknesses in electoral institutions ranging from procedural problems and elections dates to absentee voting and civic education. The document also contains a copy of the New Constitution of the Congo.
